Assault with a Deadly Weapon

Whenever I see a learner driver under instruction, I remember the overwhelming feeling of responsibility I had as a learner. The realisation that I was now in control of a machine, that with the slightest lapse in my concentration could kill someone in seconds, not just changing their life but the also the lives around them!
By the time I got my provisional license my ego had well and truly kickedĀ in and that sense of responsibility lapsed…. Dramatically.
I was reckless, and I am very blessed that I didn’t cause some serious damage, other than to cars and my inflated ego.

Now as I mature (don’t laugh, it’s happening, albeit slowly) I am once again hit with that overwhelming responsibility, though in a slightly different form…..
Regardless of whether or not you drive, you are in possession of a ‘vehicle’ that also carries the power to elicit life or death.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit. (Proverbs 18:21 NKJV)

How quickly do we forget that even before we open our mouths we can CHOOSE to plant seeds of life in the hearts and minds of those around us. Not just to those we love, but to every single person we come in contact with!
Conversely, we can also choose to tear down, to suck light, life, hope and blessing from one another. This is done, though not always intentionally or with malice, far too often.

This should be a deeply sobering thought and one that I hope and pray in my own life will continue to awaken an awareness of not just the responsibility of how we manage our tongue, but also the sheer joyful privilege of speaking life into each other’s lives that we have been given.
That, my friends, if given deep contemplation, is a revelation that will change the way you choose to live. It’s power, through Jesus Christ is limitless!

Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. (James 3:10 NKJV)
